The Bibliotheca Alexandrina launched the 16-day campaign to fight violence against women, in collaboration with the National Council for Women and with the participation of UN Women, under the slogan “Unite to End Digital Violence against Women,” highlighting this year the challenges faced by women and female athletes in the field of sports.

In his opening speech, Dr. Ahmed Zayed, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, said that women's suffering from violence, marginalization, and male domination is a “global issue” that is not limited to developing societies, pointing out that women have enormous power that enables them to shape the family system.

He also warned of the danger of “digital violence” as a new form of violence that invades private life through electronic devices, calling for the need to go beyond simply organizing events to providing “accurate data and statistics” that support decision-makers and provide a safe and secure digital environment for women and girls.

The event included an extensive panel discussion moderated by Dr. Salma Nasser, Ending Violence against Women Program Specialist.

It is worth noting that the Library building was lit in orange to express global solidarity for ending all forms of violence against women and girls.
