Alexandria… Capital of Islamic Culture for the Year 2008

Alexandria— The Islamic Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) chose Alexandria capital of Islamic culture representing the Arab world for the year 2008.

Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Library of Alexandria, stated that the BA will participate in the preparation of this important cultural event, in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture, Alexandria Governorate, Alexandria University, and other Alexandrian cultural institutions. He added that Alexandria has been always a bastion for intellectuals and a beacon for science and civilization, and that the Ancient Library of Alexandria, is the most famous library in the ancient world and middle ages— it remained alive in the minds of scholars after its loss 1600 years ago.

It is worth mentioning that the ISESCO celebrates capitals of Islamic cultures for its member states, it chose Dakar, Tripoli, Fes, and Tashkent capitals of Islmaic culture for the year 2007.
