Founders of the Arab Network for Women in Science & Technology (ANWST) Meet at the BA

Alexandria— The proceedings of "Women in Science" conference concluded on Wednesday, 24 October 2007. The two day conference was attended by a group of experts, academia, scientists, and scientific award winners from all over the world.
The closing session tackled the Arab Network for Women in Science and Technology (ANWST) initiative two years ago, which was a major step on the path towards empowering half of the society to access the field science and information technology.
During the session, Dr. Rafia Ghubash, President of Gulf University in Bahrain, stated that the meeting of the ANWST held at the BA is the second since the establishment of the Network. She added that the idea of establishing the ANWST started at the UNESCO Office in Cairo in 2003 to add the scientific dimension to empowering women politically, socially, and economically. She extended a message of thanks and gratitude to late Dr. Omar Azouz, who chaired the scientific activities at the UNESCO Office in Cairo, and who was behind the establishment of the ANWST.
On the mission of the Network, Dr. Ghubash said that the Network supports the participation of women in drafting strategies, drawing policies, and taking decisions related to science and technology, in addition to encouraging creativity in scientific and technological research in the Arab world and promoting coordination and cooperation between scientists and scientific organizations to harness knowledge to serve sustainable development in Arab countries.
