The BA Mourns the Writer Mohamed Gebril

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina mourns the great writer Mohamed Gebril, who passed away on Wednesday, 29 January 2025, at the age of 87. Dr. Ahmed Zayed, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, on behalf of the Library administration and staff, extends his sincere condolences to the family and fans of the deceased.
Born in Alexandria in 1938, Mohamed Gebril was an Egyptian journalist, novelist, and storyteller, who began his journalistic career as an editor at Al-Gomhuria newspaper. He worked at Al-Messa newspaper and edited its cultural section for years. He also served as the managing editor of the monthly Social Reform magazine and was the editor-in-chief of the Omani newspaper Al-Watan.
Gebril was fascinated by literature and published his first work, a collection of short stories in 1970, followed by several notable works of literary fiction.
Gebril won a large number of awards, the most significant of which are the Medal of Science and Arts of the first class, the State Encouragement Award, and the State Appreciation Award in Literature in 2020.
