The BA Mourns Translator Mohamed Hamdy Ibrahim

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina and its staff mourn Dr. Mohamed Hamdy Ibrahim, who passed away on Monday, 29 May 2023, hoping that God Almighty will bestow His mercy on him.
On behalf of the Library's administration and its entire staff, Prof. Ahmed Zayed, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, extends his sincere condolences to Dr. Hamdy Ibrahim’s family and students, asking God Almighty to grant them patience and solace.
It is worth mentioning that the late Dr. Mohamed Hamdy Ibrahim was one of the most prominent Greek translators in the Arab world. He served as a professor of Greek literature after obtaining his PhD in 1972. He held many senior positions throughout his career, most notably his chairmanship of the Department of Modern Greek Language and Literature at the Faculty of Arts, Cairo University. He was also the rapporteur of the Supreme Council of Culture’s Translation Committee, and a member of several committees within the Council.
He published more than seventy-five research works, including books and translations from Latin, Greek and English, and presented several distinguished translations, most notably his translation of the works of the Greek poet Cavafy, as well as his translation of Nikos Kazantzakis’ The Life and Times of Alexis Zorbas. He also published translated anthologies of Modern Greek poetry.
Dr. Mohamed Hamdy Ibrahim received several awards, including an honorary doctorate from Panteion University in Athens (October 2019), the State Award for Excellence in Literature from the Ministry of Culture and the Excellence Award in Linguistic and Literary Studies from Cairo University – the highest award in the field of humanities granted by Cairo University.
