The Bibliotheca Alexandrina: Host Institution for UNESCO/Suzanne Mubarak/Japan-Egypt Friendship Research Fellowships

Alexandria, 18 January 2005–The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has launched a new fellowship program entitled UNESCO/Suzanne Mubarak/Japan-Egypt Friendship Research Fellowships for the Empowerment of Women in Peace and Gender Studies, to honor Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak’s efforts in supporting women and her pioneer role in spreading peace.
The program aims to enhance the role of women in society, and their participation in studies and research on peace and development. The Japanese government is sponsoring the program within the framework of the UNESCO Co-Sponsored Fellowships Scheme, a joint program launched with the Governments of Japan and Egypt with a view to promoting the contribution of women—from developing countries—in peace and gender studies.
The Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) was chosen to manage this program under the supervision of UNESCO, where it will be the host institution, providing its resources for researchers around the world to perform research in the areas of: - Research on Gender Issues;
- The Role of Women in Society;
- Women and Cultural Heritage;
- Women and the Culture of Peace and Development; and
- The Role of Women during Armed Conflict.
It will also provide the researchers with academic supervisors, housing, and will hold seminars in these fields.
The program will be implemented over two years starting 2005. It offers grants to ten women candidates, from developing countries that are members of UNESCO. These women will undertake innovative and imaginative graduate and post-graduate research with a view to empowering the role of women in peace and gender studies.
