Archery and Equestrian Arts in the Mamluk Era… A New Book Released by the BA

The BA- Center for Islamic Civilization Studies issued the book entitled Archery and Equestrian Arts in the Mamluk Era by Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Abdel-Aal. The book explores Mamluk topics related to horse riding and archery, particularly focusing on equestrian manuals adorned with illustrations of archery equipment such as bows, bowstrings, and arrows, detailing their materials, varieties, dimensions, weights, and the functions of archery during the Mamluk period, whether utilized for military endeavors or recreational activities, along with its influence on visual and decorative arts. It also examines the intersection of equestrianism and archery with the visual arts through scenes of archery depicted on various objects, which include the strategic planning and execution of battles. Furthermore, it discusses the arrangement of weaponry and military tools such as swords, spears, arrows, and siege machinery, while also detailing the ranks and insignia of princes and sultans preserved in art institutions and private collections from the Mamluk period.
