The BA Alexandria and Mediterranean Research Center (Alex Med) and the Alexandria Center for Hellenistic Studies, in cooperation with the Italian Cultural Center in Cairo and the Honorary Consulate of Italy in Alexandria, organized a workshop entitled "A Journey through Egyptian Museums: from Ptolemy Philadelphus to Giuseppe Botti”, on 27 October 2024.
The workshop was inaugurated by Mr. Mario De Pasquale, Honorary Consul of Italy in Alexandria, in the presence of Prof. Yousry El-Gamal, former Minister of Education; Counselor Abeer Ali, Consul General of Lebanon in Alexandria; and Mr. Mohamed Hammad, Cultural Affairs Officer at the Consulate of Palestine in Alexandria, in addition to a group of experts and specialists in the field of museology from Egypt and Italy.
The workshop focused on the evolution of Egyptian museums, starting with the Mouseion during the reign of Ptolemy Philadelphus in the third century BC, to the Greco-Roman Museum, which was established in the late nineteenth century and is considered the first museum in the Arab world, as it was founded by the Italian archaeologist Giuseppe Botti, who was its first director.
