Several Cultural Activities at the Alexandria International Book Fair

Alexandria—The seventh edition of the Alexandria International Book Fair, held from 21 February to 4 March 2009, included several cultural activities attended by eminent writers and intellectuals in open discussions with the audience.

On 25 February 2009, a seminar was held to discuss the book Ismail’s Cairo: Paris on the Nile, moderated by Dr. Khaled Azab, Director of the BA Media Department, and speakers were Mr. Ahmed Mahmoud, Head of Translation Department in ElSherouk Newspaper and Dr. Sohair Hawas, Assistant Professor of Architectural Engineering in Cairo University.

The same day also witnessed a seminar hosting Dr. Youssef Zidan, Director of the BA Manuscript Center and Museum, discussing his Arabic novel Azazil, a bestseller. The seminar was moderated by Dr Khaled Azab, with the participation of Dr. Zakaria Ananai and Dr. El-Said El-Waraqi, members of the Egyptian’s Writers Union in Alexandria.

Another seminar entitled “Darwin Translated into Arabic”, took place on 26 February 2009, and speakers were Dr. Magdi El-Meligui, Professor of Forensic Medicine, Ain Shams University; Dr. Mahmoud Khayal, Professor of Pharmacology, Al-Azhar University; and Dr. Moustafa Fahmi, Professor in the Military Medical Academy. The seminar was moderated by Dr. Mohamed Rafiq Khalil, Professor of Surgery in the Faculty of Medicine, Alexandria University.

On the same day, Newspaper Writer and TV Presenter Khairy Ramadan spoke about his writing and media experiences, and signed his latest publications in a seminar moderated by Dr. Khaled Azab.

On 27 February 2009, Script Writer Youssef Maaty spoke about his career in another seminar moderated by Dr. Khaled Azab.

On 28 February 2009, the Fair hosted Dr. Emad Abu Ghazy, Head of the Cultural Committees in the High Council of Culture, and Dr. Abdel Hamid Hawas, Researcher in Folk and Popular Literature in a seminar about the book Folklore and Archiving, moderated by Dr. Ahmed Selim, Professor of History in the Faculty of Arts, Alexandria University.
