German Orientalist Van Ess at the BA

Alexandria— Dr. Youssef Ziedan, Director of the Manuscript Center and Museum, stated that German Orietalist Josef Van Ess, 74 years, will participate in the Fifth International Manuscript Conference entitled "Lost and Embedded Manuscript Texts (al-Makhtutat al-Mattwiyya)", organized by the Manuscript Center next May.

Van Ess is a renowned German orienalist and one of the world's most distinguished scholars of classical kalam, the Muslim theology that was the precursor to, and foundation for, modern Islam. Dr. Ziedan added that Van Ess will present a paper in the Conference entitled “Discoveries on the lost and embedded manuscripts of al‑Mu'tazilah (the Withdrawers or Secessionists)”. The paper sheds light on the embedded and lost texts, which was discovered lately and reflects the progress of al‑Mu'tazilah thought in Islam.

It is worth mentioning that the ManuscriptCenter hold annual international conferences, which started by Millenary Manuscripts Conference 2004, Signed Manuscripts Conference 2005, Commentary Manuscripts Conference 2006, and Translated Manuscripts 2007.
