Alexandria— The BA will host Prof. Gilbert S. Omenn, Professor of Internal Medicine, Human Genetics, and Public Health at the University of Michigan to deliver a lecture, entitled “International Cooperation in Proteomics & Informatics”, on Thursday, 8 November 2007, as part of the Distinguished Lectures Series. Prof. Omenn is looked upon as an accomplished leader in medicine and health policy. He has conducted extensive research in cancer proteomics, chemoprevention of cancers, public health genetics, science-based risk analysis, and health policy.

Proteomics is the large-scale study of proteins, particularly their structures and functions. The term "proteomics" was coined to make an analogy with genomics, the study of genes and is often considered the next step in the study of biological systems, after genomics.

Scientists are very interested in proteomics because it gives a much better understanding of an organism than genomics. Since proteins play a central role in the life of an organism, proteomics is instrumental in discovery of biomarkers, such as markers that indicate a particular disease.

The lecture will start at 11:30 hrs, BA Conference Center, Small Theater.
