The BA held a preparatory meeting for the World Diabetes Day (14 November) on Monday, 29 October 2007. The meeting was attended by representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), Senghor University, Dr. Mohamed El-Faham, Director of the Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP) and the coordinator of the event, and representatives from different BA departments.
Celebrating the World Diabetes Day will start with a Leadership Meeting on Wednesday, 14 November 2007, attended by leaders from the Egyptian Ministry of Health, WHO, IDF, Alexandria Governorate, and representatives from the civil society. Dr. Hatem El-Gebaly, Minister of Health and Population along with Dr. Hussein El-Gazaery, Regional Director of WHO, will hold a press conference to issue a declaration for joining efforts to put the UN Resolution on Diabetes (December 2006) into implementation. The declaration raises public awareness to restrict the increasing diabetes prevalence, improve diabetes care, achieve better quality of life for people suffering from diabetes, and prevent its complications.
A public celebration of WDD will also be held at the BA, attended by physicians, people suffering from diabetes, families and volunteers to increase the awareness among the public on the real health, social, and economic dimensions of diabetes. The BA will be lit in blue and will carry the symbol of "Unite for Diabetes", along with other participating landmarks in the world, such as Empire State Building, New York, United States.
It is worth mentioning that the City of Alexandria will host the celebrations on the World Diabetes Day on 14 November 2007, as the regional headquarters of the IDF, including more than 20 countries from Pakistan in the East to Morocco in the West.
