Donating the Nubian Museum drawings to the Bibliotheca Alexandrina

Dr. Sherif El-Hakim son of late Dr. Mahmoud El-Hakim, Architect of the Nubian Museum, donated the original drawings of the Museum to the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. Dr. Sherif El-Hakim also donated a collection of certificates and prizes granted to his late father, inter alia, the State""s Award of Merit appreciation in 1984, and the State""s First Prize in 1971. The donation included a rare photograph of Dr. Mahmoud El-Hakim taken with the musical band of his secondary school in Tanta.
Dr. Isamil Serageldin, Director of the Library, stated that this donation marks the start of a program that will be launched by the Library, which is focusing on documenting the architectural heritage of Egyptian Architects. It is suggested that this program will be extended to include the architects in the Mediterranean countries. This proposal will be discussed in details during the Mediterranean Countries Architects Conference, that is scheduled to be held in the Library at the beginning of March 2002.
The Nubian Museum was granted the Agha Khan Award for Islamic Architecture during the Award""s latest session of 2001, that was held in Aleppo in Syria. The Agha Khan Committee of Referees considered the Museum to be a contemporary notion for the revival of the Nubian culture, especially that its design is based on enhancing and maintaining the cultural works for future generations.
The design of the Museum followed the local architectural style without imitation, using the local building materials, and taking into consideration the human factor. Thus, the Committee of the Agha Khan Award, with Dr. Zahi Hawwas as one of its members, considered the building as a part of the urban structures of the city of Aswan.
